Selena Gomez just released a new single, Lose You To Love Me, that offers a stripped-down sound that is the perfect pairing for the song's unprecedented vulnerability. While we can guess who the song is about, the theme is unmistakable: that sometimes, the road home to oneself is paved with broken hearts. But is it worth it? Absolutely.
About the song, Selena wrote in a statement, "This song was inspired by many things that have happened in my life since releasing my last album. I thought it was important to share the music, as I know many can relate to the fact that the road to self-discovery generally comes through the scars in one's life."
Selena touches on one of the themes that we often discuss in this community: self-sacrifice. For me, self-sacrifice was the catalyst for my self love, too. It wasn't until I sacrificed every last shred of myself in service to others did I realize that to save myself, I needed to put myself first, rediscover who I was, and love every last cell of her. While Selena's story is one where the person who pushed her to the brink seemed to enjoy her suffering, that is not always the case. Sometimes the people who love us the most unknowingly allow us to destroy or lose ourselves.
I've found that there is nothing more cathartic or healing that expressive creation. It is self love in action. For me, that means writing a poem or a post. For Selena, it's clearly song. Whatever your personal form of emotional release is, please make space for it. Once you do, the weight and fog will start to lift, and your precise feelings and needs will become clear. Because self love is knowing your needs, expressing and fulfilling them. It is knowing yourself, and loving who and what you are - unconditionally.
It seems that Selena is well on her way when it comes to her self love journey. 24 hours after releasing Lose You To Love Me she released an empowerment anthem, Look At Her Now. My favorite lines" "What a thing to be human. Made her more of a woman." Because living life and overcoming adversity is truly how we become our truest, most authentic and powerful selves.

Lose You To Love Me
You promised the world and I fell for it
I put you first and you adored it
Set fires to my forest
And you let it burn
Sang off key in my chorus
'Cause it wasn't yours
I saw the signs and I ignored it
Rose colored glasses all distorted
Set fire to my purpose
And I let it burn
You got off on the hurtin'
When it wasn't yours, yeah
We'd always go into it blindly
I needed to lose you to find me
This dancing was killing me softly
I needed to hate you to love me, yeah
To love, love, yeah
To love, love, yeah
To love, yeah
I needed to lose you to love me, yeah
To love, love, yeah
To love, love, yeah
To love, yeah
I needed to lose you to love me
I gave my all and they all know it
You turned me down and now it's showing
In two months you replaced us
Like it was easy
Made me think I deserved it
In the thick of healing, yeah
We'd always go into it blindly
I needed to lose you to find me
This dancing was killing me softly
I needed to hate you to love me, yeah
To love, love, yeah
To love, love, yeah
To love, yeah
I needed to lose you to love me, yeah
To love, love, yeah
To love, love, yeah
To love, yeah
I needed to lose you to love me
You promised the world and I fell for it
I put you first and you adored it
Set fires to my forest
And you let it burn
Sang off key in my chorus
To love, love, yeah
To love, love, yeah
To love, yeah
I needed to hate you to love me, yeah
To love, love, yeah
To love, love, yeah
To love, yeah
I needed to lose you to love me
To love, love, yeah
To love, love, yeah
To love, yeah
And now the chapter is closed and done
To love love, yeah
To love love, yeah
To love, yeah
And now it's goodbye, it's goodbye for us
