Why We’re Obsessed With Rihanna’s Newest Lingerie Line

Rihanna officially launched Savage x Fenty Thursday night and, as indicated by the 1-hour wait time for fans to shop, it was a major success.

Since her start in 2005 with her hit single “Pon de Replay,” Rihanna has dominated the music scene, becoming the first female artist to pass 2 billion streams worldwide on Apple Music. More recently, Rihanna launched Fenty Beauty, a makeup line focussed on inclusion of all skin tones, which is well on its way to surpassing both Kim Kardashian’s and Kylie Jenner’s makeup empires. But the Barbados Babe won’t stop there. Ready for the next challenge, Rihanna is taking on new territory: lingerie for women of all colors, shapes, and sizes.

What makes this lingerie collection different from others (besides the fact that it was created by the bad gal herself)? Here’s why we’re obsessed with her line, Savage x Fenty.

Designed for Women

Whereas many lines are designed for women with men in mind, this line is created by women for women.

Rihanna told Vogue, “Women should be wearing lingerie for their damn selves. I can only hope to encourage confidence and strength by showing lingerie in another light.”

Variety of Products

Featuring four different lines for a total of 90 different products, the Caribbean Queen made sure to incorporate a variety of different products for different personalities and occasions. From everyday essential items like t-shirt bras and undies in the “On The Reg” collection to cupless bodysuits and open-back bikini bottoms that “stop your partners heart for a few delicious seconds” in the “Black Widow” collection, shoppers have a variety of looks to choose from and play with.

RiRi explains, “You don’t have to stick to one personality with lingerie; it’s fun to play around. You can be cute and playful one week and a black widow next week. You can take risks with lingerie. I want people to wear Savage x Fenty and think, I’m a bad bitch. I want women to own their beauty.”

Inclusive of All Body Types

In addition to being inclusive of different skin tones, Rihanna’s lingerie line is inclusive of all different body types, featuring a diversity of female bodies as well as including sizes not normally found in traditional lingerie collections. For example, bras come in sizes 32A to 44DD, and undies and loungewear go up to size 3XL. Rihanna told Vogue it was important that women who were shopping her line could see themselves in it.

Inclusive of All Skin Tones

Just with her her makeup line, Rihanna placed emphasis on inclusion of different skin tones, putting out products in all different shades of nude in addition to featuring women of all different colors. The line features several shades of brown, including “cocoa,” “brown sugar,” and “spice” hues.

Model Lulu Bonfils discusses this in one of her most recent interviews, explaining that Savage X Fenty’s emphasis on diversity isn’t simply about sizes. She explains, “it’s also really inclusive towards different skin tones and showing that in their ads and showing different kinds of people modeling their clothes,” she said, adding that it’s “changing what lingerie is and how it’s marketed.”

Affordable

Created by the queen herself, Rihanna could likely get away with charging higher prices; however, the Savage x Fenty prices are priced moderately, featuring bras for $39 to $59 and her signature handcuffs for just $18. Even more intricate pieces, such as corsets, are under $100.

To sum it up, we love Rihanna’s newest venture because we love the mission behind it: to empower women to feel confident and sexy in their own skin for themselves by themselves.

As stated by Rihanna in an interview with Vogue, “Savage is really about taking complete ownership of how you feel and the choices you make. As women, we’re looked at as the needy ones, the naggy ones, the ones who are going to be heartbroken in a relationship. Savage is just the reverse. And you know, guys don’t like getting the cards flipped on them — ever.”
