How many times have you heard the phrase, "New Year, New You!" Too many. It's used to sell you on diets, fitness equipment, and all kinds of other products and services that bank on you feeling less than as you start the new year. "New Year, New You," no more! This year, let's adopt the mantra, "New Year, True You," instead.
Who is the True You?
If you don't know the answer to that question, you're not alone. Whereas as children we're pretty clear about our likes and dislikes, our strengths and our weaknesses, our passion and pleasure, the pressures of adulthood make it less about who you are, and more about how perfect you can be.
The perfect employee, the perfect boss, the perfect wife, the perfect mother, the perfect friend. We craft lives that are picture perfect for social media. We push our bodies and minds to the limit. We go through the motions, keeping the hamster wheel turning, turning, turning...
Of course, this quest for perfection isn't without consequences. We strip away what makes us unique, one in eight billion to be exact, in order to conform in our perfection. Along the way, we lose sight of what makes us, us, and thus we stop feeling at home in our lives and in our bodies and in our minds.
Let's stop the wheel.
Let's do away with perfection.
Let's be authentic.
Let's love ourselves in all our authentic glory.
Let's see what happens.
The road home to yourself isn't easy, I know. It requires making space, taking time, doing the work. If you're not sure where to begin, I hope The ABCs of Self Love will help. I wrote it for me, and you, so in 2019, our old selves, our authentic selves, our true selves, get to take the lead for a change.
Happy new year my loves.
